Numerical Analysis is a second year course. Students who take BSc, BA, BSc(Ed) or BA(Ed) where one of the subjects is Mathematics will study Numerical Analysis as one of the core courses.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to solve selected mathematical problems using numerical methods. You will also be able identify errors inherent in the computations, estimate their effect and take steps to reduce their influence on the result.

Specifically, you will be able to

o   distinguish between analytical and numerical methods and solutions;

o   differentiate between direct and iterative numerical methods;

o   provide convincing reasons why numerical solutions are useful;

o   list the main sources of computational errors,

o   explain how to reduce impact of errors on numerical solutions;

o   apply numerical methods for polynomial interpolation,

o   determine roots of a nonlinear functions,

o   evaluating definite integrals of functions,

o   solve linear systems of equations,

Compute the dominant eigenvalue of a square matrix.
