New format for the newsletter

Now that so many of our readers have easy access to email, we will be sending out a shorter electronic newsletter ten times per year. This is our first such newsletter. We look forward to your response. As always, previous newsletters will be available on our website, http://www.saide.org.za, and a limited number of print versions will be available.

SAIDE conducts a formative evaluation of Mindset Learn

Mindset Learn is an educational programme offered via satellite television with multimedia support. The programme is broadcast on DStv’s Channel 82 from Monday to Friday from 08h00 until 17h30 and covers lessons in English, Science and Mathematics for Grades 10, 11 and 12. The programme includes a full magazine-styled print supplement which is available on a monthly basis in the Sunday Times newspaper and is available for downloading from the Mindset Learn website.SAIDE was commissioned to evaluate the Mindset Learn programme between August 2004 and February 2005. The purpose of the evaluation was to document teachers’ perceptions of the value of Mindset Learn and the way that teachers were using the Mindset Learn resources in their schools. Ephraim Mmekoa reports on issues emerging from the study.

Collaborating with the HEQC and NADEOSA on quality in distance education

SAIDE is currently coordinating a collaborative project with the HEQC and NADEOSA as part of the HEQC’s focus on quality in distance education over the next three years. Tessa Welch has been extensively involved in the process and highlights some of the project activities.
 

Being a Vocational Educator: A Guide for Lectures in FET Colleges

This SAIDE publication has been described by Dr Jeanne Gamble, an internationally recognised expert in the field of vocational education, as being on, “The cutting edge of new thinking about the vocational curriculum. It is an essential study guide for educators interested in the theory and practice of learning, teaching and assessment. Such guide is long overdue. It addresses the crucial shortage of study material available to vocational educators and trainers and deserves to be widely used. One of the editors, Maryla Bialobrzeska provides a synopsis of the guide.

Workshop for SADTU staff on the HEQC criteria for evaluation of teacher education programmes (14 October 2005, Tessa Welch)

Purpose: To enable SADTU staff to comment critically on the draft HEQC criteria (9 July 2005) for evaluation of the PGCE, B Ed, B Ed Hons, ACE and NPDE programmes.
