As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread, millions of learners and educational institutions globally have had to make rapid, unforeseen changes to how they run their learning programmes. Face-to-face teaching and learning have become impossible in many countries and there is uncertainty over when educational institutions will reopen their doors. This may have long-term effects on school programmes, examinations, and most importantly, learning.

OER Africa was very pleased to note that UNESCO OER Recommendation (40 C/32) was adopted at the 40th UNESCO General Conference in Paris on 25th November 2019. The formal Recommendation is yet to be posted online by UNESCO but the text can be found here. Approval of the Recommendation represents a significant recognition of the concept of open educational resources (OER) and its potential in education by governments around the world.

UNESCO's flagship Digital Learning Week 2025 takes place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This year's event, themed "AI and the future of education: Disruptions, dilemmas and directions", will bring together over 1,000 participants including 30 Ministers of Education, digital education leaders, policy-makers, researchers, and practitioners from around the globe.

UNESCO recently launched the OER Dynamic Coalition Portal, a collaborative hub that will support the growth of the global Open Educational Resources movement. This new platform serves as a space where various OER stakeholders – educators, policymakers, researchers, and OER advocates – can connect and share news, resources, and upcoming events.

As the knowledge landscape rapidly evolves due to digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and open access initiatives, academic and research librarians must continuously enhance their skills to remain effective. To support this need, OER Africa and the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions have developed a Continuous Professional Development Framework for Academic and Research Librarians, designed to provide structured and ongoing professional learning opportunities.
