The Epidemiology course intends to enable students to apply epidemiological principles in measuring  population health, epidemiologic study designs, measures of association, and interpretation of epidemiological data and evaluation of public health interventions and screening tests.

Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health: Occupational Hygiene

First two modules of a two year part-time flexible distance learning course aimed primarily at medical doctors currently practising occupational health. It includes a residential block release component which consists of between 3 or 4 weeks over the two year cycle for practicum. There will be substantial requirements for homework in the form of assignments and project related work, expected self-directed learning and distance communication between students and teachers extending over the two years.While the course is aimed primarily at medical doctors currently practicing occupational health, it is also suited to selected graduates with appropriate University qualifications in relevant health sciences, as long as these individuals are currently practicing professionally in an occupational health setting.

There are 8 modules (the two included here cover Occupational Hygiene and Epidemiology and Biostatistics). Each module has a theme around which the inputs are organised. Teaching inputs are intended to be non-didactic, and to allow student participation wherever possible. Candidates are expected to undertake substantial homework preparation and activities as well as self-directed learning. They will be expected to read widely and intensively around topics, and to provide teaching inputs themselves either directly or by way of specially structured interactive debates and role-play simulations. The content of these activities will include critical appraisal of the occupational health literature, project work, presentations by students as well as epidemiological, bio statistical, toxicological and occupational clinical assignments.

Occupation Focused Conceptual Frameworks

Conceptual frameworks module focused on occupational therapy practice and understanding OT-focused theories for third year OT students.Conceptual frameworks are the core concepts of occupational therapy thinking used in practice by occupational therapy students, therapists and scientists. This module is a continuation of what students have covered in second year where they covered generic conceptual frameworks. This OT-focused module is therefore aimed at such users and occupational therapy training institutions that could make use of the information contained in this module.

Sexually-Transmitted Diseases and Pelvic Infections

A sexually transmitted disease (STD), also known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD), is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. While in the past, these illnesses have mostly been referred to as STDs or VD, in recent years the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) has been preferred, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease. Some STIs can also be transmitted via use of an IV drug needle after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years.

Caesarean Section

A Caesarean section, also known as C-section, is a surgical procedure in which incisions are made through a mother's abdomen (laparotomy) and uterus (hysterotomy) to deliver one or more babies. It is usually performed when a vaginal delivery would put the baby's or mother's life or health at risk, although in recent times it has been also performed upon request for childbirths that could otherwise have been natural. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the rate of Caesarean sections should not exceed 15% in any country. This programme includes narrated surgical video of the procedure as well as interactive case exercises and a brief self-assessment.

Episiotomy & Repair

An episiotomy is a surgical incision through the perineum made to enlarge the vagina and assist childbirth. The incision can be midline or at an angle from the posterior end of the vulva, is performed under local anaesthetic (pudendal anesthesia) and is sutured closed after delivery. It is one of the most common medical procedures performed on women, and although its routine use in childbirth has steadily declined in recent decades.

Cases in Clinical Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryotes such as fungi and protists, and prokaryotes, which are bacteria and archaea. Viruses, though not strictly classed as living organisms, are also studied. In short; microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Microbiology is a broad term which includes virology, mycology, parasitology, bacteriology and other branches.

Microbiology is researched actively, and the field is advancing continually. We have probably only studied about one percent of all of the microbe species on Earth. Although microbes were first observed over three hundred years ago, the field of microbiology can be said to be in its infancy relative to older biological disciplines such as zoology and botany.

Clinical Chemistry (Glucose Tolerance Test)

This programme is intended as a compendium of modules on procedures in clinical chemistry. At present, the only completed module is one concerning the conduct and interpretation of the glucose tolerance test (GTT). In a GTT, glucose is adminstered to the patient in order to determine how quickly it is cleared from the blood. The test is usually used to test for diabetes, insulin resistance, and sometimes reactive hypoglycemia. The glucose is most often given orally so the common test is technically an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Mental State Examination

It is a structured way of observing and describing a patient's current state of mind, under the domains of appearance, attitude, behavior, mood and affect, speech, thought process, thought content, perception, cognition, insight and judgement.There are some minor variations in the subdivision of the MSE and the sequence and names of MSE domains.

The purpose of the MSE is to obtain a comprehensive cross-sectional description of the patient's mental state, which when combined with the biographical and historical information of the psychiatric history, allows the clinician to make an accurate diagnosis and formulation, which are required for coherent treatment planning.

The data are collected through a combination of direct and indirect means: unstructured observation while obtaining the biographical and social information, focused questions about current symptoms, and formalised psychological tests.

Supporting Collaboration and Harnessing of OER Within the Policy Framework of KNUST: Report Prepared by OER Africa on Behalf of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). As part of a broader process of stimulating collaboration amongst distance education providers taking place under the auspices of the African Council on Distance Education’s Technical Committee on Collaboration, OER Africa and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that has established a framework for a joint programme of action. Accordingly, OER Africa is providing support to KNUST in review of its current policies to assess the extent to which they facilitate collaboration and alternative, open licences for its educational materials.
